As part of judicial reform in Mongolia, specialized courts for family and child-related cases at both the first instance and appellate levels are set to begin operation on January 1, 2026. In line with this development, an international academic conference entitled “Specialized Court: Children’s right and family” will be held in Ulaanbaatar on June 25.
The conference is jointly organized by the Supreme Court of Mongolia in cooperation with the Judicial Academy, the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), and the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Over 120 participants, including judges, legal professionals, and researchers from Mongolia and eight other countries—namely the United States, Australia, Germany, Türkiye, South Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands—will attend.
The conference will focus on three main topics:
- Family and cohabitation relations
- Criminal proceedings involving adolescents
- Structure, organization, and procedures of specialized family and child courts
Topics such as adoption, divorce, maternal and child rights, the best interests of the child, guardianship, and property disputes will be discussed. In addition, participants will explore the principles of child-friendly justice, protection mechanisms aligned with the psychological characteristics of children, and international best practices.
The conference will also address the unique structure and organizational solutions of the newly established courts in Mongolia, the capacity building of specialized judges, and strategies for improving access to justice.
This international academic event is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a child-sensitive, specialized court system in Mongolia, the localization of international best practices, and the enhancement of national policies and legislation.
The conference will be livestreamed via a Zoom link available on the Judicial Academy’s e-learning platform.
